Caravaggio the 16th Century BADASS

Caravaggio was a very well paid, rebellious artist who painted many controversial pieces, and was commissioned by the Catholic church to paint subjects such as profane love, and lots of half naked boys (sounds like foreshadowing to me!)  All in all he would be the closest thing to modern day artists today.

Caravaggio painted this when he was a young boy...

He was also notorious for self portraits, this is one of him as Medusa

And another of him, slaying the giant David:

And another of him as Jesus..

Impressionism: My favorite

I have always loved impressionism.  The brushstrokes and the almost surrealism of the painting, as if you've seen through the eyes of someone who may have had a little too much absinthe to drink.  You have to admit that there is something very charming about Monet, Cezanne, and even Van Gogh's work.  It's one thing to be so precise in your paintings like Van Eycke, but it takes just as much skill to pull off these masterpieces as well:

True Artists..

Michelangelo spent his whole life trying to convince people that he was from a well rounded, aristocratic background.  He wanted people to know that he was educated and culturally saturated.  Although many loved Michelangelo, he never truly got the recognition he was searching for.

Now there is no denying that he was one of the best artists in the history of the world.  He sometimes worked 18 hours a day without changing his clothes or bathing, often sleeping wherever it was he happened to be working.  He sculpted this piece when he was 24 years old.

I see a lot of this in Kanye West.  He has a pretty large repertoire of production, his involvement in the fashion industry, and his sense of art all work to make him more than what people perceive.  I have always been an enormous Kanye fan.  He has the ability to truly perceive with not just his eyes, but with his emotion.  He puts his heart and soul into his work and I honestly feel that commitment in his music.  There aren't a lot of artists that can be derivative and contemporary at the same time.  Kanye is able to bridge the gap between motown soul, 90's hip hop, and electronica; all the while, creating a sound all his own.  Below is the cover of Complex, the concept he designed for the shoot:
